In the United Kingdom, neither banks or the government insure the contents of a safe deposit box. An individual should purchase insurance for the safety deposit box in order to cover theft, fire, flooding, terrorist attacks and other natural disasters and catastrophes.

Once a safety deposit box has been rented the renter pays the safety deposit facility or safe deposit bank a fee for the use of the box, the fee’s can vary depending on the size of the box. The safety deposit box can be opened only with presentation of individually assigned keys and the safe deposit centres own custodian key. Access to the vault was with a proper signature, and sometimes a code or pin number of some sort.
