High gold prices increases theft of jewellery and in particular Asian Gold.
Havering Police are asking all residents to be aware of their home security in particular around jewellery and gold items.
Det Sup Tony Bennett said “Although we have not seen a significant rise in the number of burglaries in Havering we have seen a change in the type of property that is being stolen. With the rise in the price of gold and the increase in the ability to sell gold thieves are targeting those who hold high value items of jewellery in their homes.”
“We have seen a change in the type of property that is being stolen”
Watches and Asian gold in particular have been targeted over the last few weeks. In October almost 25 % of burglaries had quantities of Asian Gold stolen. In some cases tens of thousands of pounds of jewellery is being held at home addresses across the borough. Theft of high value watches have also seen an increase.
With gold prices at an all time high Havering Police are asking homeowners to urgently review their home security, fit alarms where possible and gain bespoke advice from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. Being burgled is distressing at any time and the loss of a sentimental piece of jewellery or watch can only make it worse.
Tips for keeping your valuables safe:
- Keep all valuables in a safe environment.
- Buy a small safe for use when your valuables are at home and fix to a secure surface.
- Where possible use a bank or safety deposit box.
- Photograph each piece of jewellery separately with written description – this helps us appeal for information and assists in returning jewellery to you.
- Remember to lock all external windows and doors including rear and side entrances when you go out.
- User timer switches to operate lights in your home when you are out.
- If you have an alarm in your home – please remember to set it.
Havering Police will be working with community groups, retail outlets and residents to ensure that we reduce the risk of becoming a victim of this type of crime and stop the selling on or stolen goods at Havering retail outlets. If you have information relating to stolen jewellery or have been offered jewellery to purchase – please call Havering Police on 101.
Safer NeighbourhoodS Teams across the borough can offer a home security visit – identifying areas of potential vulnerability in your home and providing low cost solutions where appropriate.
